A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
