Senate Passes Legislation to Disclose Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will require the publication of investigative files related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the joint action involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

This legislation next heads to Trump for his signature. Trump signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for months dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who stated he worried the measure would make public identifying details of individuals involved, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
