Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
